Now that you are actually on the look for a suitable truck for your business, another thing you have to consider is the type of engine you want. There are two schools of thoughts on this and they have been battling it out for ages, but each has their own pros and cons. So here are the basic arguments on getting a diesel or gas food truck.
Price: Gas engines are relatively cheaper than diesel ones, when purchased brand new. But used trucks are priced for the over-all condition of the truck, as well as the type of kitchen it has. So it’s up to you to assess the entire value of the truck. The price of gas itself has also been much cheaper for the past ten years than diesel, but you get greater fuel economy from a diesel. Up to 30-35% greater, according to the US Department of Energy. So that’s more miles per gallon.
Maintenance: Diesel engines tend to need more frequent checks and maintenance.
Durability/Longevity: Diesel’s are workhorses and are built to last. If maintained properly, you can easily get 300,000 miles on them.
Resale price: Of course, since diesels last longer you can get a better price on a diesel than a gas one with comparables miles.
Ask yourself how far or how long will you be driving the truck and will you be able to recoup the truck’s price difference from the fuel savings you will be getting on a diesel?
